Entrepreneurship isn’t just a Career Path; it’s a Life Skill

When people hear ‘entrepreneurship’ they often picture Dragons’ Den pitches or risky start-ups. But for the Armed Forces community, learning enterprise skills is about something far more practical: business knowhow, building resilience, confidence, and the ability to make informed choices about the future.

We don’t push people into business ownership at X-Forces Enterprise (XFE). We give them the knowledge to make the right decision, whether that’s to start, grow, pause, or not start a business at all. The key is to make informed decisions and mitigate risk which empowers individuals, especially during times of major life transition.

Whether you’re leaving service, supporting a serving partner, recovering from injury, or exploring a portfolio career, understanding enterprise and entrepreneurship skills like budgeting, market research, or networking is not optional. These are life skills. They serve you whether you’re self-employed, employed, or navigating both worlds, which many in our community do.

Let’s not forget the broader picture either. According to the UK Government’s ‘Business Population Estimates’ (2024), small businesses make up 99.9% of the UK business population, with sole proprietors and microbusinesses leading the charge.

The British Business Bank’s 2024/25 report forecasts continued growth in start-up activity post-pandemic, particularly in service sectors where military families already have transferrable experience. And with AI, digital marketplaces, and new supply chain models reshaping the world of work, the ability to think entrepreneurially isn’t just a niche advantage: it’s becoming a necessity.

We must embed enterprise education into the Armed Forces transition journey, not as a side option, but as a core component. Because having the confidence to create your own path, understand your value, and navigate economic uncertainty is real power and gives you the edge as you make decisions about your next career.

“Enterprise skills are lifelong tools, not just stepping stones to starting a business. This isn’t a linear journey, and success shouldn’t be measured by how quickly someone launches after a course. It’s about making informed, strategic choices, at the right moment, in the right way,” explains Dougie Thomson, XFE’s Training and Events Manager.

“Our role is to support each individual in applying these skills wherever life takes them and sometimes that means employment or self-employment, but either way you walk away with so much knowledge and new connections. I know this first-hand – it changes lives!”

Finally, I’d like to thank our partners who make this work possible: The Royal British Legion, Greenwich Hospital Charity, the Career Transition Partnership, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, and the British Business Bank. Your support helps us ensure no one is left behind on the path to purposeful, sustainable futures.
