A Special Day for Berkshire’s Cadets at Windsor Castle

A group picture of cadets with their certificates at the High Sheriff's Summer Reception

Yesterday was one of the most special afternoons of my Shrieval year.

Over 50 cadets and their dedicated Adult Volunteers from across Berkshire joined us at Windsor Castle for an afternoon of celebration, recognition and connection. Representing our Police, Fire, Sea, Army and RAF Cadet organisations, they were guests of honour for a day that was created entirely for them.

Long before becoming High Sheriff, I saw first-hand the extraordinary contribution cadets make to events across our county. In my professional life, I have worked alongside them at countless civic, charitable and community occasions. They arrive with polished shoes, immaculate uniforms and unwavering professionalism. They stand proudly as guards of honour, welcome dignitaries, support public events and, quite often, help make others feel valued and special.

Yet yesterday, I wanted to turn that around. I wanted our cadets to be the special guests.

This year, I have spoken often about my three themes as High Sheriff: Recognition, Encouragement and Convening. Yesterday’s reception brought all three to life. Bringing together cadets from different organisations across Berkshire created an opportunity not only to celebrate their achievements, but also to build new friendships and strengthen the connections that make our communities more resilient.

What strikes me most about cadet service is that it goes far beyond uniforms and parades. Cadet organisations help young people develop confidence, resilience, leadership, teamwork and a commitment to service that will stay with them throughout their lives. These are the qualities that strengthen communities and shape future leaders.

From a Victorian-themed quiz and afternoon tea to the presentation of certificates recognising their achievements, the atmosphere was one of pride, laughter and connection. Most importantly, it was a chance for Berkshire to pause and acknowledge the extraordinary contribution made not just by our cadets, but also by the adult volunteers, instructors and leaders who support them so generously.

As I watched conversations flourish and new friendships form, I was reminded once again that Berkshire’s future is in safe hands.

My sincere thanks to Lieutenant General Phil Jones, Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle, to the South East Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, BaxterStorey, and everyone who helped make the afternoon possible.

Because community matters. Service matters. And our young people deserve to know that their contribution matters too.
